The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has disclosed the shortlists across ten categories for the upcoming 96th Oscars ceremony, showcasing standout contenders such as ‘Barbie,’ ‘Oppenheimer,’ and ‘The Last Voyage of the Demeter.’
Greta Gerwig’s comedic masterpiece, ‘Barbie,’ leads the mentions with nominations in five categories, including sound and original song featuring submissions from renowned artists like Billie Eilish and Dua Lipa. The film also receives recognition for its original score composed by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt.
Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ secures nods in three categories: hairstyling, sound, and original score.
While some anticipated films like ‘The Color Purple’ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ did not make the cut, the shortlists feature A24’s unconventional ‘Beau is Afraid’ and Universal Pictures’ chilling release ‘The Last Voyage of the Demeter.’
Among the musical compositions, notable entries come from Daniel Pemberton’s ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,’ Ludwig Göransson’s ‘Oppenheimer,’ and the late Robbie Robertson’s ‘Killers of the Flower Moon.’ The list includes esteemed veterans like Thomas Newman and John Williams.
The diversity within the recognized composers is a standout aspect, featuring talents such as Jon Batiste, Kris Bowers, Laura Karpman, and Mica Levi.
The host for the 96th Oscars in 2024 is set to be television host-comedian Jimmy Kimmel, marking his return.
The Oscar nomination period is scheduled from Jan. 11-16, with the official nominees announcement slated for Jan. 23.
