Anurag Kashyap Reflects on ‘Animal’ Impact and Says It Provoked Important Conversations

Animal, starring Ranbir Kapoor, has emerged as one of the highest-grossing Indian films worldwide this year. Despite the film sparking controversy for its portrayal of women and glorification of toxic masculinity, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap believes that Animal has contributed positively by initiating conversations around feminism.

In an interview with OTT Play at the Kolkata International Film Festival, Anurag Kashyap addressed the reactions to Animal, stating, “A film like Animal has galvanized more feminists in this country than any other feminist film. It has created more discussion around misogyny than any other film. So it is doing something good.”

Kashyap emphasized the importance of being provoked, stating, “You need a provocateur in a society for people to understand. More people were taught feminism because of Animal and the discussions around it. Why are you scared of a provocateur? We are educated and learned people. Why are we afraid of someone who provokes us? I think being provoked is a good thing.”

Animal, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, explores the toxic relationship between a father and son, played by Anil Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor, respectively. Despite generating polarizing opinions, the film has achieved significant box office success, grossing ₹717.46 crore worldwide since its release on December 1.
