The Story Of Shri Krishna Lifting The Govardhan Hill

Once, when the elders of Braj including Nanda were planning to worship Lord Indra, a child Shri Krishna asked them why they were doing so. Nanda Ji explained to Krishna that this was done every year to please Indra Deva so that he would continue to provide rain to the people of Braj as and when required. Then Shri Krishna said then everyone should worship Govardhan Mountain because our cows graze there. Everyone accepted the words of Shri Krishna and started worshiping Govardhan Parvat.

But Lord Indra, getting angry with the people of Braj for not worshiping him, decided to punish them by sending terrible clouds of flood in Vrindavan, and then it started raining in Vrindavan. This rain lasted for several days, due to which Braj was destroyed. The people of Braj became frightened and started asking Lord Krishna for help. Hearing his prayer, Lord Krishna lifted the entire Govardhan Mountain at once with his left hand and saved the people of Braj from the wrath of Indra Dev. For seven days everyone stayed under the hill.

Seeing all this, Lord Indra called back the clouds of destruction, thus stopping the thunder and rain. The sky became clear again and the sun came out in Braj. , And as soon as the weather cleared, everyone returned home. All the residents of Braj including Nanda Maharaja, Yashoda, and Balarama praised Krishna and embraced him happily.

Thus the false pride of King Indra was shattered to pieces. Indra apologized to the Lord with folded hands. God forgave them. And since then Govardhan Parvat is worshiped every year.
