The Polestar 4 has a high-definition screen in place of the rear window

At Auto Shanghai 2023, Polestar unveiled the Polestar 4, the second SUV in its lineup. In reality, it’s more accurately referred to as an SUV coupé because it has the four doors and space of an SUV but the sloping roof and aerodynamics of a coupé.

The Polestar 4 has a tonne of innovative features that draw attention, but the absence of a rearview mirror has got to be the most daring design decision. When backing up, drivers will instead view screens inside their cabins that show a live feed from a rear camera mounted on the roof.

In comparison to simply looking out the window, the Volvo spinoff claims that this provides the driver with a wider field of view back window. Drivers are sure to experience anxiety as a result. What happens if a rock shatters that camera or if the feed develops a bug and ceases to function? Polestar must be fairly confident in what it is bringing to the market because there is no rear window, which means no backup in the event of technical difficulties.

The decision to do away with the rear window, according to the manufacturer, was first tested with the Polestar Precept concept car.

“With Polestar Precept, we previewed a stunning new occupant experience by removing the rear window and pushing the read header, which plays an integral safety role, further back,” stated Maximilian Missoni, head of design at Polestar, in a statement. “This means that rear passengers can now have a unique experience in our SUV coupé.”

The absence of the rear window also makes it possible to have a long glass roof that extends above the heads of the passengers in the back. Depending on the needs of the occupants, the glass roof may have electrochromic functionality, or “smart glass,” which can change from transparent to opaque.

From the outside, the car appears to be moving quickly. The frameless windows are flush with the car’s body, and the door handles are retractable. This is the fastest production model Polestar has yet produced; it can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds and has a maximum power output of 544 hp. This is due to the low nose, which gives it the aerodynamics it needs.

There will be single-motor and dual-motor versions of the Polestar 4. The semi-active suspension features in the dual-motor version will allow for sporty performance without sacrificing comfort.

A 102 kWh battery will be present in both long-range models, and the dual motor’s intended range is 350 miles. All models include bi-directional charging for vehicle-to-load capabilities along with up to 200 kW DC and 22 kW AC charging.

The Polestar 4 will debut first in China, with production beginning in November 2023 at a renewable energy-powered production facility owned by Geely in Hangzhou Bay.

Beginning in 2024, Polestar intends to enter additional markets, such as Europe, North America, and Asia Pacific.

Between the Polestar 2 and 3, the Polestar 4 will cost about $60,000.

Polestar 4 technical data

The Polestar 4 is loaded with technology, like all new EVs today, and is slowly but surely moving towards the as-yet-unrealized “autonomous future.”

The 15.4-inch front screen serves as the interface for the car’s infotainment system, which is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Cockpit Platform and Android Automotive OS.

Both Google and Apple CarPlay including Google Assistant, Maps, and Play—are integrated. In order to get directions or music, users can say things like “Hey Google, play ‘Despacito,'” or “Drive me to the nearest charging station,” and the Harman Kardon audio system, which comes with a 12-speaker option, will respond.

For the enjoyment of the passengers in the back, there is also a second media and climate control screen mounted between the front seats.

But hold on! There is more! I mean screens. Because we don’t already have enough screens in our lives, there are more screens.

In front of the steering wheel is a 10.2-inch driver display that provides information on speed, battery life, and range. Additionally, it can display information about other drivers, current driving assistance features, and navigation. If that’s too distracting, there’s also a head-up display, which is essentially a screen projected onto your windscreen and provides the driver with “key vehicle, telephony and navigation information,” according to Polestar. The HUD text colour will change from white to yellow when it is snowing to increase visibility.

Polestar makes use of Mobileye’s Supervision ADAS, which makes use of 12 cameras, 1 radar, and 12 ultrasonic sensors. The Pilot Pack, which includes lane change assistance, is an add-on that owners can purchase. The Polestar 4 has a driver monitoring camera that watches the driver’s eyes and head movements to make sure they are not relying too heavily on the ADAS or nodding off while driving. Along with the hands-on detection in the steering wheel, this keeps the driver involved.
