Let’s know the history of Asia Cup

The Asia Cup was started in 1984 and since then this tournament has been organized almost every two or three years. The last time this tournament was held was in 2018. The winning team of that season was the Indian team, which captured the Asia Cup for a record seventh time.

Sri Lanka comes second after India in the Asia Cup, which has won the battle for Asian supremacy 5 times, while Pakistan’s team has got a chance to lift the Asia Cup only twice. It took 16 years for Pakistan to win the first trophy.

India won the first season of the Asia Cup in 1984. Sri Lanka won the title in 1986 and then India won the title three times in a row in 1988, 1991 and 1995. After this Sri Lankan team became the winner of Asia Cup in 1997.

In the year 2000, Pakistan got a chance to win the title for the first time. After this, the Sri Lankan team was the winner in 2004 and 2008 as well. After this, India won the title in the year 2010. Once again in 2012, Pakistan’s team won the Asia Cup. Sri Lanka won in 2014 and India in 2016 and 2018.

India is the most successful side in the tournament’s history with seven titles (1984, 1988, 1990-91, 1995, 2010, 2016, 2018). Sri Lanka is second on the list with five titles, followed by Pakistan which has won the title twice. Sri Lanka is also the only team to feature in all 14 editions.

Bangladesh has hosted the Asia Cup the most number of times (five). UAE will play host for the fourth time with the 2022 edition. Meanwhile, India has only hosted the tournament once in 1990-91 when it clinched its third title after beating Sri Lanka in the final in Kolkata.
