Following India’s defeat in the World Cup final against Australia, Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill took to social media to share their emotions. Despite the loss, the team received widespread appreciation for their performance throughout the tournament, with many attributing the final outcome to a challenging day at work.
Led by Rohit Sharma, Team India showcased an exceptional journey in the men’s ODI World Cup, triumphing over every opponent until the final showdown. However, their stellar run came to an end as Australia secured a six-wicket victory at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Opting to bat first, India posted a modest total of 240 in 50 overs. Australia’s dominance on the slow Ahmedabad wicket limited India to just four boundaries between overs 11 to 50. While Virat Kohli and KL Rahul contributed with half-centuries, the slow pace impacted the overall score.
Despite early hopes created by Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah, who reduced Australia to 47/3 in 7 overs, a formidable partnership between Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne turned the tide. The duo added 192 runs for the fourth wicket, with Head scoring 137(120) and Labuschagne remaining unbeaten on 58(110).
Although the defeat left the team disheartened, fans and experts praised their overall performance, considering it a challenging day at the office. Shreyas Iyer expressed the team’s heartbreak, emphasizing the valuable lessons learned during his first World Cup experience. Shubman Gill echoed similar sentiments, acknowledging the disappointment but emphasizing the team’s spirit and dedication.
As the ODI World Cup concludes, attention now shifts to the T20Is, with India set to face Australia in the shorter format starting from November 23 in Visakhapatnam.
