PM Modi to hold Covid meeting a day after govt advises to ‘mask back’ amid surge in China

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to chair a meeting to discuss the Covid situation in India on 22 December 2022.

The meeting comes a day after the Union government advised people to begin wearing face masks once again in crowded places.

Union Health Minister cautioned people that “Covid is not over yet”, but said that India is prepared to manage any situation. He asked people to get vaccinated and follow Covid-appropriate behavior.

Airports will do random tests on international travelers from China and other countries.

India has detected a few cases of the Omicron BF.7 subvariant which is believed to be causing a Covid surge in China.

Amid a surge in COVID-19 cases globally, the central government briefed all states to conduct genome sequencing of samples, the additional chief secretary of Health Manoj Agarwal informed on Wednesday.

“Yesterday (Tuesday), the central government briefed all states on the increasing trend of COVID-19 variants in parts of the world and asked them to ensure that whole genome sequencing is done in all states,” he said.

There has been an alarming surge in COVID cases in China, Japan, South Korea, France, and the United States. The spike is being blamed on the new Omicron sub-variant BF.7, which has also been detected in four Indian states.
