NPCI Issues New Guidelines: Deactivation of UPI IDs Looms for Inactive Users; Get the Full Details Here

Your respective banks will notify you via email or message before deactivating your UPI ID.

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has introduced fresh guidelines that will result in the deactivation of UPI IDs. All banks and third-party apps, including Google Pay and PhonePe, will block UPI IDs with no transactions for over a year. Post-December 31st, NPCI will proceed to deactivate IDs with no transaction history in the last year.

As per the new NPCI guideline, third-party apps and PSP banks will scrutinize the UPI ID and linked cellphone number of inactive clients. If there’s no record of credit or debit transactions associated with the UPI ID, it will be closed, rendering customers unable to make transactions with these IDs starting in the new year.

Banks and third-party apps have until December 31 to identify such inactive UPI IDs, and your respective banks will issue notifications via email or message before initiating the deactivation process.

The NPCI anticipates that these stringent measures will curtail the risk of funds being erroneously transferred to the wrong account, a concern that has become increasingly prevalent in recent years. With users frequently changing mobile numbers and failing to deactivate UPI IDs linked to their old phones, the potential for incorrect transactions rises significantly.
