Liv Hewson, a nonbinary actor from “Yellowjackets,” isn’t running for an Emmy because of the gendered categories

There is no room for me, so I can’t apply for this, the actor told Variety.

This year, Liv Hewson will not be considered for an Emmy. The Yellowjackets actress, who portrays Vanessa “Van” Palmer’s teenage self in the popular Showtime drama, recently admitted to Variety that they do not intend to submit oneself for consideration for an Emmy because of the gendered categories of the ceremony.

Hewson, a nonbinary 27-year-old, claimed that there was “no place for me in the acting categories.” “I wouldn’t submit myself as an actress; that would be inaccurate. It also doesn’t make sense to group me among the boys.

They said, “It’s pretty simple and not that loaded.” I am unable to apply since there is no room for me.

Hewson is hardly the first actor to do so. In order to avoid participating in a gender-specific awards category, Broadway artist Justin David Sullivan, a principal cast member in the Max Martin jukebox musical & Juliet, withdrew from consideration for the Tony Awards earlier this year.

“I was told I had to choose [the category in which] I felt comfortable, and in that process, I struggled a lot,” the performer said in a statement to Playbill. “There’s nothing more that I want to empower than nonbinary people. I want to demonstrate that it’s possible to be nonbinary on Broadway, portray a non-binary character there, and receive nominations and perhaps even awards. I believed I was powerless to decide. It didn’t resonate with me, so I didn’t feel comfortable belonging to either category.

“I decided the only thing that felt right to me would be to abstain from nomination consideration,” Sullivan told the site. I won’t be nominated for a Tony, therefore.

When contacted by PEOPLE on Friday morning, an Emmys spokesperson declined to comment. Hewson is also well-known for their parts in the 2019 romance movie Let It Snow and the zombie comedy Santa Clarita Diet on Netflix.

Since the show’s debut in the fall of 2021, Hewson has played the teenage Van.

Lauren Ambrose started playing the adult Van in season 2, which is now running. After 25 years apart, the adult Van re-enters the lives of the other survivors, played by Melanie Lynskey as Shauna, Tawny Cypress as Taissa, Juliette Lewis as Natalie, Christina Ricci as Misty, and Simone Kessell as Lottie.

Lynskey, 45, had expressed her want to find out what transpired to her and see an adult Van enter the scene.

According to Entertainment Tonight, she stated, “Because I very much want [Liv] to be on the show forever and ever,” at a discussion at the 10th annual SCAD TVfest in February 2022.

She continued by saying that Van is her husband Jason Ritter’s “favourite character.”

As a group of high school soccer players deal with the psychological effects of spending 19 months stranded in the Canadian wilderness following a plane crash, Yellowjackets cuts back and forth between their experiences as teenagers and adults.

The actor added, “I enjoyed the chance to merely portray a character, yet within the world of such a cultural mainstay: holiday romantic comedies.

They said, “I read the script and was like, ‘Oh, damn, this will be fun.’” Additionally, I wish I had seen something similar when I was younger.

So, Hewson said, “I definitely felt fortunate to be able to do that. Showtime broadcasts brand-new episodes of Yellowjackets season 2 every Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
