According to Spanish soccer journalist Guillem Balagué, Lionel Messi, one of the sport’s all-time greats who has played for French club Paris Saint-Germain for the last two years and won a World Cup with Argentina in 2022, has opted to join the North American league.

The former Barcelona great reportedly rejected down an even bigger deal from Saudi Arabia, which has been luring soccer stars to the Saudi Premier League on multi-million dollar contracts. One of Messi’s fiercest competitors, Christiano Ronald, entered the league last year and is reputedly paid a stunning $213 million each year.
Messi’s omission is a blow to the Saudis, but it comes on the heels of a surprising golf merger that would unite the Saudi-backed LIV Golf league with the PGA Tour.
