India Pays Tribute To The Chief OF Defense Staff

Chief of Defence Staff Bipin Rawat, died in a chopper crash near Ooty. According to the Air Force, Gen Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat, and 11 other persons died in that fateful incident. General Rawat was named India’s first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) on December 30, 2019.

Army Chief General MM Naravane set up a Chair of Excellence in memory of Gen Rawat at the United Service Institution of India.

The formal announcement was made by Gen MM Naravane, Chief of Army Staff and Officiating Chairman, at a solemn ceremony organized at the South Block on 15 March 2022. Gen Bipin Rawat Memorial Chair of Excellence was focused on the field of Jointness and Integration. The Chair of Excellence is a befitting tribute to the astute leadership and professionalism of the General. The late Gen. Rawat who served as India’s first CDS as well as the 27th Army Chief was steering one of the most radical transformations of the Indian military.

Members who paid an honorarium to the nominated Chair of Excellence were, Lieutenant General Manoj Pande, the VCOAS, Air Marshal Sandeep Singh, VCAS, Vice Admiral SN Ghormade, VCNS, Air Marshal BR Krishna, Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to the Chairman Chiefs of Staff Committee (CISC), and Lt Gen SK Sharma, DCOAS (Strat) also attended the event. A cheque of Rs 5 lakhs was handed over to Maj Gen BK Sharma (retd), Director, USI.

India paid tribute to Bipin Rawat, who was the country’s first chief of defense staff. Known for being blunt and outspoken, the senior Army officer, his wife, and 11 others died in a helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu’s Coonoor last year.

According to a statement, the Memorial Chair of Excellence will focus on the field of jointness and integration among the armed forces.

Their bodies will be brought to the national capital of Delhi. Gen Rawat and his wife Madhulika’s funerals will be held.

“Late General Bipin Rawat who served as India’s first CDS as well as the 27th Chief of Indian Army was an outstanding professional and was steering one of the most radical transformations of the Indian military,” the Army stated.

India’s defense minister Rajnath Singh paid homage to the victims in parliament.

“With profound grief and heavy heart, I stand to convey the unfortunate news of the crash of the military helicopter in the noon of 8 December 2021, with India’s first Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Bipin Rawat on board,” said Mr. Singh.

Artists are showcasing their creativity to pay tributes to General Rawat. An artist paid his tributes to General Rawat by cutting a leaf to create the CDS portrait. Another artist from Amroha, Zoyab Khan, paid tributes to General Rawat, with 8 feet-large charcoal portrait.

Bollywood actors Anupam Kher and Anil Kapoor took to their respective Twitter handle to pay tributes to General Rawat and shared their photos with the Chief of Defence Staff.

Anupam Kher, tweeted, “Deeply saddened to hear of the passing of CDS #GenBipin Rawat, his wife, and 11 more military officers. Had the good fortune of meeting Rawat many times. He had amazing audacity and unfathomable love for the country. Shaking hands with him, “Jai Hind” would come out naturally from the heart and tongue!”
