Jyothika made her Bollywood debut in the film Priyadarshan in 1997, and the Hindi film Doli Saja Ke Rakhna. Her first Tamil film was Vaali (1999) and her first Telugu film was Tagore (2003), opposite megastar Chiranjeevi. She also won her first Filmfare Award for Vaali (1999) as Best Female Debut – South.

A series of successful films followed and she gained prominence for her performances in Kushi (2000), Perazhagan (2004), Chandramukhi (2005), and Mozhi (2007).
