Was He Not The First Choice For Sholay?
Amjad Khan was not the first choice for the character of ‘Gabbar Singh’ in ‘Sholay’. Actor Danny was first approached for the role. But actor Danny was busy shooting for Feroz Khan’s film ‘Dharmatma’ at that time and therefore Danny refused to do ‘Sholay’.
Actor Amjad Khan got the role of ‘Gabbar’ after Danny’s rejection. Salman Khan’s father Salim Khan suggested the name Amjad Khan for the film ‘Sholay’.
Amjad Khan made his debut as a hero in the movie ‘Hindustan Ki Kasam’ in 1973. But he got real recognition from the movie ‘Sholay’. Those who know Amjad Khan closely say that Amjad was fond of drinking tea. He drank as many as thirty cups of tea every day and when he did not have tea, he also found it difficult to work.
An Accident Changed His Life!
An accident happened while Amjad Khan was working with Amitabh Bachchan in the film ‘The Great Gambler’. The film was to be shot in Goa and for that Amjad Khan left for Goa with his family, while he was on his way, his car met with a terrible accident in which Amjad Khan was seriously injured.
Amjad Khan suffered tremendous damage in this accident. Due to this accident, Amjad Khan was confined to a wheelchair for a long time. He had to have an operation. Meanwhile, Amitabh Bachchan helped Amjad Khan and his family a lot. From what happened in the accident, Amjad Khan’s bad phase seemed to have just begun. Amjad Khan started gaining weight from here. Amjad Khan was someone who gave great priority to fitness. Amjad Khan used to play badminton daily and exercise, but after the accident, everything stopped. Amjad Khan’s condition worsened due to weight gain and he fell into a coma. After some time he also came out of it. Amjad Khan died of a heart attack on 27 July 1992.
