During Dhanteras, Hindus worship Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kuber and observe the Pradosh fast. Besides gold and silver ornaments, people purchase copper, silver, and brass utensils, which are filled with water or food before entering the house. They also buy electronic equipment, vehicles, phones, laptops, refrigerators, microwaves, brooms, clothes, and other household items.
Purchasing metal or clay Lakshmi and Ganesh idols is considered auspicious on this day. In the evening, four clay or flour lamps are lit and placed at the main entrance of the house, with lamp donation being an important ritual.
