- Sonali Kulkarni was always interested in acting and started acting in plays at an early age as her elder brother was associated with theatre. He wrote and directed plays.
- She got an opportunity to work with actor Pandit Satyadev Dubey and took acting more seriously.

- In 2000, she rose to fame with her first commercial film Neelima Khan in Mission Kashmir. She played the role of actor Hrithik Roshan’s mother and Sanjay Dutt’s wife. Interestingly, she is a few months younger than Hrithik Roshan, and it was her first commercial film that made her a familiar face to the Indian audience.
- She likes to write. She worked as an editor for Viva, a supplementary to the Marathi daily, where she used to write a weekly column titled ‘So Cool’.

- In 2013, her Gujarati language film The Good Road was selected as the Indian entry for the ‘Best Foreign Language Film at the 86th Academy Awards.

- Sonali Kulkarni participated in the dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 2 (2007). She was also a part of the first season of the adventure reality show Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi (2008).
