BCCI Officials to Discuss Virat Kohli’s T20I Future; Ishan Kishan Considered for No. 3 Slot in T20 World Cup

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) top officials are scheduled to meet with Virat Kohli to deliberate on his role in T20 Internationals (T20Is), considering he is reportedly not the primary choice for the T20 World Cup. As preparations for the T20 World Cup in June 2024 gain momentum, discussions surrounding the Indian team’s composition have shifted from ODIs to T20Is.

In a comprehensive five-hour meeting held in New Delhi, BCCI officials, including Secretary Jay Shah, Vice President Rajeev Shukla, Treasurer Ashish Shelar, and the selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar, laid out a roadmap for the forthcoming T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA. Captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Rahul Dravid, and the selection committee participated in the strategic planning.

With only six T20Is remaining before finalizing the T20 World Cup squad—three against South Africa and three against Afghanistan—the selectors face a limited opportunity to assess the full-strength squad. Notably, Kohli, Rohit, and Jasprit Bumrah have opted for breaks during the white-ball leg of the South Africa tour, leaving the Afghanistan series as the primary assessment ground.

According to reports, while Rohit and Bumrah are automatic choices in the T20I XI, Kohli’s spot in the T20 World Cup squad is not assured. During the meeting, BCCI officials expressed their preference for Rohit Sharma to lead the Indian side in the T20 World Cup. Rohit’s stellar performance in the ODI World Cup 2023, where he emerged as the highest run scorer, solidified his position as a key player in the limited-overs format.

On the other hand, Kohli, despite his record-breaking achievements in the ODI World Cup, is not currently considered the first choice at No. 3 in T20Is. The BCCI officials and selectors favor a player capable of playing attacking cricket from the outset, and Ishan Kishan is emerging as the frontrunner for the No. 3 position. Kishan’s aggressive batting during the home series against Australia has garnered attention.

While Kohli’s performance in the IPL 2024 will be a factor for reconsideration, the official noted that Kohli’s typical opening role for the Royal Challengers Bangalore poses a challenge, as the opening slots in the Indian T20I side are already filled. The official mentioned potential opening partners for Rohit as Yashasvi Jaiswal or Shubman Gill.

As Ishan Kishan is being evaluated for the No. 3 slot, other players like Suryakumar Yadav, Rinku Singh, Hardik Pandya, and Ravindra Jadeja are anticipated to fill the remaining positions in the batting order. The official acknowledged that Kohli’s role will be discussed with him soon, and any decision will be aligned with Kohli’s preferences for T20Is. Kohli is set to make a return to the Indian side for the Test series against South Africa starting on December 26.
