It started with just Rs 295, which has become a Rs 12,000 crore company today. Britannia’s journey so far has been full of ups and downs. This company was started in the year 1892 by a group of British businessmen from Kolkata. The foundation of the company was laid with a cost of just Rs.295.

Britannia started with biscuits. Its foundation was laid in a small house in Kolkata. For some time it was bought by Gupta Brothers. In which Nalin Chandra Gupta was the chief. With time, there were changes in the process of making biscuits. The work of making it manually was stopped. In 1910, biscuits were started with an electric machine.

Biscuit business started


Biscuit business started. In 1918, the Gupta brothers joined hands with Kolkata-based businessman CH Holmes Partner to expand the business and launched the Britannia Biscuit Company Limited (BBCo). In 1921, the company started importing gas ovens from abroad to increase production. In 1924, a Pu factory was set up in Mumbai and gradually Britannia’s biscuits started becoming popular in the country.

World War II increased the company’s earnings


Due to the Second World War, many companies of the world came to a standstill. At the same time, some companies also benefited. Britannia was one of those companies. During the war, Britannia got the biggest order to supply biscuits to the Allied forces of India. This order increased the company’s annual earnings by 8 percent to Rs 1.36 crore.

The company continued to experiment continuously. Launched Slice and Wrapped Bread. Bourbon Biscuit was introduced in 1955 and Britannia Cake in 1963. By the year 1983, the company had become famous across the country. The company’s annual earnings figure had crossed the Rs 100 crore mark.

Good Day brand launched


In 1986, the company launched its new brand and named it Good Day. After this, the company introduced Little Hearts and 50-50 biscuits, which were very much liked. The growth of the company increased year by year and in the year 2000, Britannia was included in the list of 300 companies of Forbes Global. In 2004, the company got the superbrand status. In 2016, the company experimented. Prepared a new product by combining cake and cookies.

Business spread in 60 countries


In 2017, Britannia started manufacturing ready-to-eat products with Greek company Chipita SA. Moving forward year after year, it became a company with a market value of 12 thousand crores. The current chairman of Britannia is Nusli Wadia and MD is Varun Berry. The company’s business is spread in more than 60 countries of the world. The company has more than 50 lakh outlets and 13 factories in India.
